How to Swing a Golf Club

Swinging a golf club is easy and once you know how you will never regret it because of how much fun you will have golfing. Learning to swing a golf club involves working through the four stages of the swing: the backswing, the downswing, impact and follow-through.

Stand with your spine in a neutral position and bend from the hips, with feet shoulders width apart.

Rotate the torso on the back swing, and 'set' the lead wrist fully before you reach the top, creating a 90 degree angle between your lead forearm and the shaft.

Swinging freely results in the right forearm crossing over the left forearm.

When swinging down, 'haul' the head of the club so that it lags behind everything else, and allow the 90 degree forearm/shaft angle to increase, and then unwind rapidly throughout the impact area. This creates tremendous club head speed while allowing the body to move relatively slowly and maintain control.

Make sure to have the shaft leaning forward toward the target at the moment of impact, this will help to have the face of the club face square at impact, an important factor in directional control.
"Swing-set-through" is the rhythm. It isn't critical how far back you take the club but if you have released the club correctly, you will follow through completely; your belt buckle will be facing the target, the club will be behind you, you will be balanced on your lead foot with the back foot balanced on its toe. You should be able to comfortably hold this finish as you watch the ball fly off into the distance..!

Tips

Direction is controlled by the swings path and the club face angle at impact.

  • Distance is controlled by club head speed at impact, how well you strike it and the angle of attack of the club head (steep or shallow).

  • Hit or Swing. Swing at 80%. Hit harder. Swing distance and speed in general, swinging harder doesn’t necessarily help you hit the ball farther.

  • Have good balance at all times.

  • Try adjusting your grip on the club if it's slicing or hooking, to help to square the clubs face angle at impact.

  • Take a video lesson from a good pro. They are experts and can help you to learn what works for you and stop you from developing bad habits early on which are difficult to change later on.

  • Golf is a game, so have fun. Remember, Tiger Woods or Vijay Singh didn't get where they were by just luck, it takes practice.
  •
  • With the time and effort, you'll be hitting golf balls onto the fairway like a pro.
